All you need to know about Mi-17V5 Chopper that crashed In Tamil Nadu
Yesterday was one of the most painful days in the history of our
country, CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 others on board a Mi-17V5
IAF helicopter were killed after it crashed in Tamil Nadu Coonoor. But we
still don’t know the exact cause of the crash any
way officials started an investigation on the crash.
Here are some things that you might be interested in about
the helicopter
The Mil Mi-17 is a Soviet-designed Russian military
helicopter family in production at two factories in Kazan and Ulan-Ude. It is
known as the Mi-8M series in Russian service. The helicopter is mostly used as a medium twin-turbine transport helicopter, as well as an armed gunship version.
The chopper is designed to carry personnel, cargo, and equipment inside its
cargo cabin or on an external sling. The helicopter is capable of dropping
tactical air assault forces and reconnaissance teams. Equipped with modern
avionics, the helicopter is capable of operating in any geographical and
climatic conditions, day and night, along with adverse weather situations
The soviet-designed Russian helicopter is capable of landing
on unprepared sites at night and in limited adverse weather conditions. The
helicopter can carry a maximum load of 13,000 kilograms, flying at a maximum
speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
These are the main
advantages of Mi-17V, operability in any geographical and climatic conditions,
day and night, in adverse weather; operability in high-altitude and hot conditions;
versatility (capability to effectively perform assault/transport and combat
tasks during one mission sortie); capability to land on unprepared sites at
night and in limited adverse weather conditions; heavy armor protection; high
target approach accuracy through the use of a satellite navigation system; high
safety and single-engine flight and landing capability; efficient
loading/unloading of cargo and paratroopers through the presence of two doors
on the sides of the helicopter and a powered ramp.
There have been no major
crashes of the helicopter apart from a single accident in Jammu and Kashmir in
February 2019, the day after India conducted an aerial strike in Pakistan's
Balakot in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack.
